The Berlin Wall was built by the Communist government (East Germany) in August 13, 1961. The Eastern German police, army and volunteer workers started building the barbed-wire concrete wall. It was pretty much impossible to cross this wall.

To prevent any body from crossing, sand was placed on the floor on each side of the wall to mark footprints, and dogs and soldiers with guns kept watch for 'fugitives'. People were desperate to cross the wall to see their relatives, friends, etc. Even though they knew what was on the other side of the Berlin Wall, they still tried to cross. At least more than 150 people died trying to cross over.
